SPX Stuck at 7741, GP's SNAP Thesis & AI Chips | Market Hours #211
The recap
Nick, Ben and GP were all back at the table for Market Hours #211, and the theme of the day was patience. The S&P has now spent 11 straight weeks parked at 7741 — GP's line from 2023, the 1.61 extension off the COVID lows. Everyone wants a breakout or a breakdown. GP's view: the midterms are the catalyst, and once that uncertainty resolves, the next leg is higher. Until then, SPY and QQQ are range-bound, so we're using last week's candle as the box. Break the top and it's off to the races; lose it and a trip toward the 200-day is on the table.
We also pushed back on the 'breadth is terrible' crowd. Under the surface, the number of stocks above their 20- and 200-day averages has been climbing even while the indices chopped. And failing to take out all-time highs isn't automatically bearish — META dropped 8% on good earnings, filled the gap two days later and ran. Dell, on the other hand, got smoked when it lost the 50-day.
The centerpiece was GP's case for SNAP. Roughly a $10.9B market cap against a billion users, about $6.5B in revenue and around $750M in free cash flow, plus Gen Z trusting it on privacy and real AI upside. He's about a third of the way into a position, would add around $5 or on strength above $7–10, and thinks a 5x is possible over time.
From there we got into Elon: the proposed Tesla–SpaceX merger, why GP thinks it's more about control than value, and Nick's cup-and-handle read on SpaceX with the 175–178 IPO-day high as the battleground. On AI, the chip playbook is still NVDA, AVGO and AMD (with ASML and TSM as the picks and shovels) — and GP likes Broadcom right here under its 200-day.
Crypto closed it out: Zcash's violent flush and the descending wedge Nick is trading, Bitcoin 'out on parole' with 87K as the next pivot, and ETH lagging until Bitcoin stops soaking up all the money. We finished on long-term bases breaking out in ULTA, V, GILD and TMO. The message: watch how the charts set up, and just do it.
Key takeaways
SPX has sat at 7741 (the 1.61 extension) for 11 weeks — the midterms could be the trigger.
Use last week's SPY/QQQ candle as the range: a break of the high is the go signal.
Breadth is quietly improving under the hood; failed ATH tests aren't automatically bearish.
GP is building a SNAP position on fundamentals (users, FCF, AI upside) — adds near $5 or on strength.
SpaceX's 175–178 IPO-day high is the line to watch for its cup and handle.
AI chips: NVDA, AVGO, AMD still lead; AVGO under the 200-day is GP's buy zone.
Crypto: Bitcoin's next pivot is 87K; Zcash is a descending-wedge trade.
Long-term bases resolving higher: ULTA, V, GILD, TMO.
